Maybe you’re moving, remodeling, or you just got tired of your old furniture and decided to get something new. Whatever the reason you have for getting rid of your old furniture, it may not always be easy to do. It varies whether or not a local area will be willing to pick up large pieces of furniture, and even if they are willing, they may not always make it easy. Additionally, you might prefer that this furniture not end up in a landfill. So, we are going to discuss some things you can do other than throw your old furniture away.
Repurpose Your Furniture
You may no longer want to use your old dresser or chair, but maybe you could use these items for something else. Could you use your old chair for a planter? Or, maybe your dresser would work as a bench. Sometimes end tables can work well as shelves. There are a number of possibilities for using your old furniture for a new purpose.
Donate Your Old Furniture To Charity
There are many charities that will gladly take your furniture if it’s in usable condition. Several charities have thrift stores associated with them that will often be willing to accept and sell your old furniture. Some of these charities may even be willing to pick up the furniture and haul it away for you. You may also be able to find some places, such as homeless shelters, that may need some of the items you are trying to dispose of. In either of these cases, your old furniture would be helping other people rather than ending up in a landfill.
Restore Your Old Furniture
Maybe your old furniture is not as bad as it seems. With a little work, you may be able to have your furniture looking good again. Fixing up your old furniture is probably cheaper and easier than you might think. It may even be fun. You’ll be able to use your creativity to make something nice for your home. You can easily find some nice fabric on sale or clearance at a store that you can use to reupholster your furniture. Then you can easily find instructions on the Internet on how to do the reupholstering.
For wood furniture that doesn’t need reupholstering, you should be able to find instructions on how to sand and stain the furniture so that it will look great again. Also, if you need any handles or knobs, these are easy to find. You even have a number of decorative choices available. You should even be able to find replacement parts to fix drawers or reattach the legs on your furniture.
Sell Your Old Furniture
You may not want your old furniture anymore, but someone else may be quite happy with it. There are places online you can sell your furniture, such as eBay or Facebook marketplace. Or, you could try to sell your old furniture at a local consignment store.
Final Thoughts
Whether you decide you’re willing to give your old furniture another chance or you’re sure you want to get rid of it, there are a number of options for disposing of your old furniture other than sending it to the dump. Any of the options we listed above are better for the environment than adding one more thing to the landfill. So, consider if any of these options or any options you can think of yourself will help keep your old furniture from ending up in the trash.
