Considering Winter Dumpster Rental? 6 Tips to Follow

While most people think of dumpster rental as a spring or summer necessity, sometimes circumstances require you to rent a dumpster during the winter. Whether you’re moving, dealing with the aftermath of a fire, or clearing out clutter from a section of your home, dumpster rental during the winter requires special considerations to go smoothly. For more information, read on or contact ABH Services for helpful assistance.

Tip 1: Determine the optimal dumpster location.

When trying to figure out where to place your rental dumpster, it’s best to consider a few factors. You want it to be easy for the company to deliver and pick up the dumpster, so the location needs to be easy to drive up to without anything blocking the path. It should also be close enough to the area you’ll be bringing trash out of. The space should have flat ground to prevent tipping.

Tip 2: Ensure the area is frequently plowed and cleared.

While your dumpster site may be perfect when the weather is nice, significant snow fall can create an impediment not only for the dumpster rental company, but also for you and others who are taking trips to and from the dumpster. Make sure that the area is regularly plowed and kept clear, especially after snow storms.

Tip 3: Prevent icy build-up.

It’s also important to salt the area, especially if you’re noticing visible ice. The space around and in front of the dumpster should be salted at least twice every week or any time you see an icy build-up in the area. Even if you can’t see icy buildup, if you or anyone else finds it slippery when you tread over that part of the ground, put salt down just to be safe. When it comes to preventing slips and falls, and the ensuing injuries that can occur, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Tip 4: Cover the dumpster when not in use.

Covering the dumpster can prevent animals and insects from finding their way inside, causing a nuisance. It can also keep snow from gathering inside the dumpster, which can melt and freeze into ice, significantly increasing the weight and fullness of the dumpster and preventing you from making the best use of the space inside.

Tip 5: Wear proper footwear.

Another precaution to prevent slipping and injuries during the winter when taking trash out to the dumpster involves making sure that everyone is wearing proper footwear. Shoes with gripping texture on the bottoms are best. Either work boots or sturdy athletic shoes would work well. Shoes with smooth bottoms will present a hazard to the wearer, especially if they’re taking multiple trips in and out to the dumpster.

Tip 6: Dress appropriately for the weather.

Finally, your feet should not be the only part of your body that you protect.  Proper outerwear is essential when the temperature dips down. Don’t overdress, especially if you’re taking trips back and forth between a heated building, but ensure that you’re warm enough and wear gloves and a hat.
