How to Get Rid of Recyclables

Recycling services help clear out the garbage for communities while reducing the amount of stuff going to landfills.  There are recycling opportunities all around us – at the office, home and in public spaces.  Parks, eateries and coffee shops to name a few places offer bins separating recyclables.

Sometimes throwing away a Starbucks coffee cup can be challenging.  Is it landfill material or recyclable?  It’s not always clear what needs recycling.  With all the options to discard something small like a coffee cup what should you do when you have other items to recycle?

Some things you can recycle include:

Electronics.  Electronics are easy to get, but when you upgrade you need to decided what to do with the old technology.  The ongoing improvements to technology make upgrading our electronics necessary.  We all want fast devices with more memory. With carriers offering discounts to upgrade it’s easy to collect a lot of phone and tablet devices.  This is also true for buying and upgrading laptops.  Recycle these devices including, DVD players, computers, smart televisions, stereos and more.  Check with your local recycling center to see about collecting cash for your outdated electronics.

Tool shed or garage items. Lawn mowers, landscape equipment, shovels, rakes, unused lumber and wood can be recycled.  A recycling center accepts garage and tool shed items.  Turn them in and collect cash.

Plastic lids.  Plastic lids are everywhere.  We use them to cap sodas, juices, milk and water bottles.  Plastic for these caps is different since resins are separated in plastic recycling. Resins are separated before processing as the plastic for caps has a different melting point than other plastics.

Collect these caps and send them in for recycling.  A Google search provides companies offering recycling services for this kind of item.

Recycling helps the environment and your wallet.

Lead battery recycling.  Batteries are in so many devices we use, but what do you do with them when they have no more energy?  If they aren’t the rechargeable kind you may want to recycle them.  The lead in batteries can be melted and reused.

Recycling batteries reduces lead that damages the environment.  It also conserves mineral resources.  This type of recyclable does require careful recycling.  And once recycled there’s less solid waste for our landfills.  The good thing, too, is you can collect money from this recyclable item when recycling it as scrap metal.

Ink toner cartridges. Rather than tossing these empty containers into the garbage you can recycle them.  You can cash in these cartridges at your local recycling center.  If you don’t want to take them to your recycling center return them to the manufacturer. There is no shipping charge to return these as you can get a label from the manufacturer.  The manufacturer is not going to refill the cartridges, but they will take care of recycling them for you.
