If you are demolishing or cleaning out your space, ABH Services can help you recycle, donate or reclaim much of your trash. This can affect the cost of disposal in your favor. If you are emptying out a home or business, you should be aware that many items that once upon a time were routinely taken to landfills are now banned from today’s solid waste facilities. White goods and electronics are some of the materials that require special treatment before their components can be recycled.
White goods
In Massachusetts, white goods are among the materials banned from landfills. What are white goods? These are large electrical appliances including refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, stoves, air conditioners, electric ranges and even some lighting units. Many of these appliances contain hazardous materials such as capacitors and CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons). These environmentally hazardous materials need to be removed before the metal can be shredded, baled and reused. Older lighting and appliances manufactured prior to 1979 may also contain PCBs or ballast that also must be removed prior to recycling. Fortunately, ABH knows the ins and outs of recycling white goods. We will ensure your old appliances, lighting, and air conditioning units are disposed of in the safest, most legal and eco-friendly way possible.
Electronics
If it has a plug, then ABH Services can recycle it. Televisions, cell phones, computers and other electronic devices contain plastics, glass and metals that can be reprocessed and reused. Electronics also contain minute traces of gold and other precious minerals that can be recovered in bulk processing facilities. We encourage our clients to use our recycling services to mitigate landfill waste and help the environment. If you are disposing of computers, you will want to destroy your hard drive to protect your privacy. ABH Services can do this essential job for you too.
Reuse and reclamation
When buildings must come down, ABH Services seeks out ways to reclaim as many building materials as possible. Sometimes as much as 85 percent of a building’s materials can be reclaimed or recycled. Salvageable items include windows, doors, vents, plumbing, fixtures, and sometimes even studs or siding. You may also be eligible for tax credits for donating reusable materials to non-profit organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores. Let ABH Services advise you on your options.
