What is the Difference Between Mold and Mildew

Many are confused by the difference between mold and mildew, and there is even some misinformation as to what they really are. Both of these are common examples of fungi, and both primarily grow in humid environments leading many to confuse the two or even assume that they are the same thing.

These two fungi are actually distinct; however, mildew is, in fact, a sub-classification of mold. But, by learning what the differences are between the two, you can much more easily identify and remove them when you find them in your home. So, let’s clear this up and discuss these two fungi.

Mold

Mold is a variety of fungus incorporating more than 100,000 known varieties, a great number of which are completely harmless to your health. Fungus is defined as a mold by forming microscopic filaments, the fuzz mold is known for, and spreads by forming microscopic spores which float through the air.

When these spores land on an organic surface with oxygen and moisture present, they can grow and produce more spores. This can occur on any organic surface, such as wood, potted plants, paper, common forms of insulation, and fabric carpeting.

However, it grows best in damp environments with plenty of moisture, and it is commonly found in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and anywhere else humidity is high.

Whereas mildew will grow only on the surface of an object, mold will penetrate and grow into porous materials. Over time this will break down organic materials and destroy them, and mold cannot be removed with ordinary cleaning chemicals. Mold growth takes many colors, including black, brown, orange, and many others. Most often, the growth will appear fuzzy and produce a musty odor.

The spores of mold are hazardous to breathe and can cause a severe risk to health. Often times the symptoms resemble allergic reactions and can be even worse if the person breathing it already has respiratory issues. If you are suddenly experiencing issues that you think may be due to mold, contact your doctor and a professional mold remediation expert.

Mildew

Mildew is a particular variety of mold described by FEMA as an early-stage mold. Just as other varieties, mildew is a form of fungi that spreads through microscopic spores. It will grow on organic surfaces in humid environments.

However, in contrast to its close relatives, mildew will not grow into materials only on the surface itself. This means it will only cause minor damage. For the most part, it simply looks unpleasant. Often times this is found in areas such as between tiles in your bathroom, and fortunately, it is easy to remove with ordinary household cleaners.

It is difficult to tell these fungi apart due to their similar musty odor, but when you do smell it, you can generally be certain one of them is present. However, the appearance of these fungi can often be told apart. Mildew is more visible in early growth since it grows on the surface of materials. Also, it will typically appear to have a down or powder texture. Ones with a powder texture will begin as a pale white or gray but change to a yellow and darken with time. Down texture mildew will begin yellow and turn to a dark brown.

Mildew is not as dangerous as mold or as damaging to objects. However, it should be dealt with quickly. It will also pose a threat to health with long-term exposure.

Danger

Though less so than mold, mildew fungi still produce mycotoxins. These chemicals can produce mild to extreme health issues in people and animals. Often these resemble flu-like or allergic reactions.

The biggest reason that mold is more dangerous than mildew is because it is much harder to detect and treat. Even when surface mold is removed, it will simply remain within the material and re-grow without professional treatment, unlike mildew.

Final Thoughts

As you have seen, mildew and mold are very distinct, even though mildew is a subclassification of mold. You have also seen the importance of identifying the different types in order to treat them. An ordinary homeowner may be able to deal with mild amounts of mildew, but when mold is identified, it requires professional remediation to safely remove.
